Пророчке речи Наталије Гончарове из 1913. године: „Убеђена сам да савремена руска уметност иде таквим темпом и достиже такву висину да ће у блиској будућности играти водећу улогу у свету […] И није далеко време, када ће Запад учити од нас“ (Н. Гончарова 1913: 27, наведено према Ичин 2022: 173), показале су се тачним не само кад је у питању руска авангардна уметност и њен утицај на Западу већ и кад је посреди научно истраживање и покушај разумевања феномена руске авангарде. Познато је, наиме, да су руски формалисти, иницијално заинтересовани за поезију футуриста, сопствену књижевну теорију изградили на изучавању стваралаштва руских авангардних уметника, на основу чега су формулисали и опште принципе проучавања уметности који су уграђени у саме темеље двадесетовековних изучавања књижевности, а без којих је наука о књижевности незамислива.
