Abstract

The thematic section Utopia for the 21st Century: Challenges and Hopes wishes to investigate the opportunities and hindrances that utopia faces in the 21st century. Having in mind the current state of affairs, we would like to launch an open dialogue that contributes to an exchange of ideas and a better understanding of utopia and its role in the present historical moment. Can utopia respond to numerous challenges and offer hope? How does utopian tradition contribute to the ongoing public debate on issues such as sustainability, sharing, ecology, education reform, in/equality, neoliberal capitalism, neo/post/colonialism, austerity measures, climate change, global warming, fast development of technology, AI? What kind of utopia would be most appropriate for the highly technologically developed world of the 21st century? Can utopia help us find an alternative to the present situation? Has utopia been defeated by antiutopia/ dystopia? Is a utopian counter-offensive possible, not only in literature but in general?
