Sources for the Critical Edition of Njegoš’s Šćepan Mali

In this paper, four sources are considered for determining the critical edition of the song Šćepan Mali in dramatic form by Petar II Petrović Njegoš. The first source is the preserved first page of the poet's autograph from 1847 (the two first replicas of Serdar Vukal and the first replica of Abbot Teodosije Mrkojević with accompanying prose sequences, from the first appearance of the first act) (pt. 1), the second - the fourth appearance of the first act published in Latin at the beginning July 1850 in the June issue of the Trieste newspaper Jadranski Slavjan (item 2), the third - the same fragment published in unreformed Cyrillic in December 1850 in the Belgrade newspaper Srbske novine (item 3), and the fourth and essential - the first edition of the work published in March 1851 in Trieste, and printed in Zagreb (item 4).
The paper uses an intertextual comparative analysis of the four sources mentioned to eliminate typographical errors in the first edition of the song (and unjustified editorial changes by Andrija Stojković) to determine the original text. The analysis shows that the text of the work was before it was printed in Vuk's reformed Cyrillic script, transcribed in Latin from Njegoš's manuscript (or an authorized pure copy, which was copied for printing by someone else). That manuscript was created using a late version of Slavonic Serbian script and orthography, which was used in the middle of the 19th century.
