Abstract

Stanislav Krakov’s short prose, especially that written between 1920 and 1926, belongs to the corpus of significant expressionist-avant-garde heritage, which is positioned at the very peak of the Serbian avant-garde and its mature age. Following in the footsteps of Crnjanski, Rastko Petrović and other Serbian expressionist avant-gardists, Krakov advanced short prose genres, especially the short story, the sketch and the novella, both in terms of different fragmentary and mostly cinematographic storytelling, as well as regarding themes and motifs (the motifs of madness, migration of the soul, doppelgängers, incest and the cult of the prostitute). With his own original style, using intertextual relations, Krakov creates a fantastic-grotesque type of text, emphasizing the archetypal erotic basis of the conflict between his male and female characters, while problematizing gender roles. The author’s sense of the bizarre and exotic, as well as the gender coding of conventional roles, make Krakov’s short prose open and challenging for further comparative and intermedial studies.
