Abstract

One of the main reasons for the underdevelopment of the film industry in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was the lack of continuous, systematic, and professional education regarding film-related occupations. In this regard, the state took no initiative, and all efforts were left to the enthusiasm and attempts of individuals to establish so-called film schools. One such individual was the author Sima Pandurović, who opened his own Sound Film Academy towards the end of November 1931. In his petition to the Ministry of Education, Pandurović outlined in detail the curriculum for his Sound Film Academy. He envisioned the school as having two departments, the art department and technical department. For this endeavor, he secured an appropriate teaching staff, led by the then-popular film director Karlo Josip Novak. The school was financed by a group of wealthy and respected merchants, engineers, and landowners. After less than two years, however, internal disputes arose, and Pandurović withdrew due to illness. Thus, this interwar attempt at developing film education in Serbia and Yugoslavia ended in failure.
