L’enfant terrible of Serbian Literature or a Great Scandalizer: The Reception of Miodrag Bulatović’s Work in France

Miodrag Bulatović (1930–1991) was one of the most translated Serbian writers in France during his lifetime, whereas many as six of his books were published. Seen as the L'Enfant terrible of Serbian literature, he provoked different, contradictory reactions from critics in this country: from the enthusiasm with which the first translations of his novels were followed to sporadic challenges and, later, fierce denial, to the oblivion of extract a new edition of one of his books. Following the chronological course in the analysis of the reception of Bulatović's works in France - from the publication of the translation of The Red Rooster in 1963 to the reprint of this novel in 2015 - we will try to reflect the dynamics of the evolution of that reception as faithfully as possible. factors, aesthetic but also non-literary in nature, which influenced the atypical reception of this writer in French criticism.
