The Serbian Novel and the Myth of the Great War (Postcritique, Postmemory, Posthistory)

The introduction of the present paper deals with the possibility of cooperation of the theoretical perspectives of postcritique (R. Felski), postmemory (M. Hirsch), and post-history (W. Flusser), as contemporary attempts at the restoration of the ethical function of the humanistic disciplines in correlation with the rhetorical and aesthetic interpretation of literary art. That approach is applied in the following section through the interpretation of the Serbian novel on the Great War topic, written by the authors of the participant-generation (M. Crnjanski, R. Petrović, S. Krakov, D. Vasić, B. Ćosić and S. Jakovljević), the first revisionist postmemory generation (D. Ćosić, D. Popović and V. Stevanović), as well as the novelistic works of the present-day generation of writers (S. Vladušić, D. Atanacković and A. Gatalica). Thanks to different, often controversial concepts concerning the outcome and political-historical repercussions of the First World War, this epochal event appears in Serbian literature as a culturally symptomatic and discursively articulated catalyst of collective memory and identity self-understanding.
