This paper aims to open new perspectives for interpreting the literary work of J.M. Coetzee, using the example of his work The Childhood of Jesus, which represents a thematic and subsequently formal-stylistic turning point in comparison to his previous novelistic body of work. The Childhood of Jesus is an experimental novel, or a “high-risk” novel, as it introduces, within seemingly dystopian frameworks, ultimately new themes that resist any kind of theoretical-interpretative approaches.
