Pavle Vasić was an extraordinarily complex person with diverse interests, working in different yet related branches of art. Having acquired a broad education, he was a painter, scholar, professor, and art critic. He painted over 250 oils on canvas, thousands of drawings and watercolours, around thirty prints, costume designs, illustrations, and even a few murals. He authored around thirty books, over 3,000 studies, papers, and exhibition reviews. Painting, however, was always his greatest passion. He loved to draw even as a child and, from 1922 to 1924, he studied painting at the Art School in Belgrade, learning from Beta Vukanović, Petar Dobrović, and Ilija Šobajić. He was often inspired by the literary works he read (both novels and epic poetry), as well as scenes from everyday life at school and on the streets, which, besides their artistic merit, now also hold documentary value.
