This paper examines the relationship between history and fiction in contemporary Serbian drama through an analysis of Siniša Kovačević’s plays The Great Drama and The Schoolteacher. The study employs an interdisciplinary approach grounded in the theories of Herbert Lindenberger, Hayden White, Paul Ricoeur, and Georg Lukács, not with the aim of constructing a universal theoretical model for the study of drama, but in order to establish an analytical framework appropriate to the interpretation of the selected works. The analysis demonstrates that The Great Drama transforms political material into an existential and tragic conflict, whereas The Schoolteacher remains within the boundaries of ideologically inflected dramatization. The study concludes that the artistic scope of historical drama depends on the degree of the author’s prefigurative distance from historical material.
