Appearance and Interior: Clothing and and Eros in the Novels of Borisav Stanković

The paper analyzes the erotic function of clothing in the novels Nečista krv (Impure Blood), Gazda Mladen (Master Mladen) and Pevci (The Singers) by Borisav Stanković. In these novels clothing is not merely a descriptive element, but an active agent in the construction of erotic discourse. The analysis focuses on scenes in which specific garments (blouse, necklace, wedding dress etc.) shape the sensual perception of the body, signify desire, and convey erotic tension. Special attention is paid to the dynamics of dressing and undressing, the movement of fabric across the body, as well as to the psychological and social meanings embedded in clothing. It is shown that clothing often functions as a boundary between the private and the public, the acceptable and the forbidden, and as a means of bodily self-expression within a patriarchal culture. The paper argues that the erotic charge in Stanković’s novels does not arise from direct depictions of the (naked) body, but rather from a narrative play of concealment and revelation.
