Other Customs, Other Attire: The Transfiguration of the Individual and Society in the Prose of Milica Jakovljević Mir-Jam

This brief study primarily examines women’s fashion (clothing, hairstyles, footwear, makeup, jewelry) in the interwar period in Serbia, i.e., the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and its symbolic representations as depicted in the prose of Milica Jakovljević Mir-Jam. Since Mir-Jam’s prose invariably revolves around love—or, more precisely, erotic—narratives, fashion is also considered through the prism of erotological interpretations. Fashion appears as a semiotic subsystem embedded within the complex language of amorous communication and, more broadly, as an autonomous symbolic structure within the branching social ecosystem.
